Computing and E-Safety

Aims of our Computing and E-Safety programme

At Fawbert and Barnard Infants' School we aim to prepare our children for a rapidly changing world through the use of technology. Our computing curriculum is designed in conjunction with PurpleMash to enable them to use computational thinking and creativity to further understand our world. We aim to use the computing curriculum to make links with mathematics, science, and design and technology. At the core of our computing curriculum is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, we intend for our children to use information technology to create programmes, systems and a range of content. We aim to ensure that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Pupils' definition: Computing teaches us how to use technology

What Computing looks like at F&B

The National Curriculum forms the basis of long term planning.  We use the Purple Mash Scheme of Learning for medium and short term planning. A range of software including... and online sources are used to support this teaching. Computing skills are taught both discretely and across the curriculum, supporting other areas of learning across the school. In Reception and Key Stage 1, children are taught to use equipment and software confidently and purposefully, to communicate and handle information and to support their problem-solving, recording and expressive skills. Our planned curriculum for digital literacy that includes online safety is broad in covering a range of issues including understanding current issues.

Technology is also used to support mathematics and home learning through the use of Times Table Rockstars and Numbots.
Computing Outcomes at F&B

Our curriculum will enable children to be proficient users of technology who are able to work both independently and collaboratively.

Computing hardware and software will be utilised to enhance the learning outcomes of our children, across the curriculum.

Montessori:

For Computing, we further embed our Integrated Montessori Approach through free use of computers and technological toys. Although we sometimes direct activities to particular areas to enable our children to learn the key skills of computing, we are able to use the safe platform of PurpleMash to enable children to learn through experience. In EYFS they have PurpleMash up all day everyday on 2 class computers to enable them to explore mini mash. We send home this log in too, so they are able to build familiarity of the areas and explore it to further enhance key skills learnt within school. Not only this, we also use a range of technological toys on the Montessori shelves, and in the general provision to explore how they work.

E Safety for Children

Using computers and the Internet safely is really important.

We use the expert skills from The 2 Johns' to enhance the pupils', staff and parent knowledge on how to keep safe online, the current risks and vulnerabilities. To find our more please click here: https://esafetytraining.org/ Our next parent session is 1st July 2024

EYFS 2023-2024: Children have been developing their vocabulary related to technology and have learnt to use the technology safely. Children have accessed Minimash programmes on the desktop computers to develop their early digital literacy skills. They have improved mouse control and keyboard typing. Children also explore the functions of a variety of technological toys within their free choice areas such as BeeBots.

Year1 2023-2024: Children have been learning to log in and log out to keep their work safe. Children are able to save and retrieve work. Children have learnt to create e-books and pictograms. They have used the camera function to add images to their work including to create their own digital superhero art. Children have learnt to write simple code and debug an algorithm. Over the course of the year, children have the opportunity to work through 'unplugged' activities as well as learning on the iPad. Have a look at what we have been up to this year!

Year2 2023-2024: Children learnt to create music, search the internet safely and further develop their knowledge of the World Wide Web. Children have continued to develop their digital artistic skills learning about different features of 2Paint. They also develop their knowledge of algorithms, deepening their coding skills using 2Code.
