Curriculum

The school curriculum is driven by the F&B's Vision:

This vision is driven by the unique context of the school. First and foremost, it endeavours to respond to the needs of the community in respect of well-being, building emotional resilience, aspiration, developing cultural capital and a richness of vocabulary that enables effective communication. Simultaneously to harness the opportunities and celebrate the potential that the local environment has to offer in supporting learning and enjoyment for life. From this understanding and celebration of locality we aim to empower children to become global citizens with a real sense of agency in making a positive difference to the world.

Curriculum Aims

We aim to provide an environment in which all children can flourish. We recognise that our demographic at F&B is varied: with pupils having a wide range of differing experiences, families and learning needs, our curriculum must be designed in order to enable all learners to maximise progress and succeed. Therefore, we provide a strong focus on core skills and knowledge, alongside the wider opportunities to challenge learners.

Our aim is to provide a curriculum which develops key learning skills and knowledge which will equip them for adult life and to become life-long learners whilst enriching the children’s life experiences, challenges them to achieve the best they can.

Our curriculum aims to be creative and flexible, responding to the children’s interests and the world around them to ensure that learning is meaningful and relevant, whilst ensuring there is coverage and progression of key skills. We realise the importance of every minute of every day that the children spend with us, and fill it with rich, first-hand experiences that seek to challenge, engage and stimulate the children, providing the highest possible standards of education to raise aspirations.

We know that children need a mixture of knowledge and skills to be independent in their learning and achieve this through different styles of learning, offering opportunities to be imaginativeexplore the environment and ask questions to shape their learning. As well as discrete lessons in areas such as maths, phonics and spelling we offer cross curricular opportunities where children can apply the basic skills.

Our school provides a safesecure environment where we actively teach and promote attitudes to learning such as resilience and willingness to learn. Our spiritual, moral, social and cultural education ensures we help children to explore their feelings and beliefs and to respect and celebrate diversity, appreciating the uniqueness and successes of all and the motto of ‘being your best’ can be felt in everything we do.

At Fawbert and Barnard Infants' School, all teachers are responsible for providing an inclusive curriculum that is differentiated for those with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). We have high expectations for all pupils and are committed to ensuring our curriculum complies with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. 

Our inclusion statement emphasises the importance of providing an inclusive learning environment for all pupils including those with SEND. Additional information on this can be found in our Inclusion pages and within our wider policies.

Through our curriculum and teaching children will learn to:

  • Develop their oracy skills in order to become confident, articulate speakers;
  • Become fluent readers, with a real love of books, in order to fully access the wider curriculum;
  • Write, with accuracy, for a range of purposes;
  • Develop the skills to approach calculations and reasoning with confidence;
  • Become independent thinkers with an ability to ask and answer questions;
  • Have an awareness of the world and global issues
  • Develop skills, knowledge and creativity across a wide range of subjects;
  • Develop high aspirations as resilient learners with a growth mindset;
  • Be happy, well-balanced, polite members of our community;
  • Form strong friendships and work collaboratively;
  • Grow in self-esteem and self-confidence and
  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Fawbert and Barnard Infants’ School and Reedings’ Junior School 

Combined Curriculum Intent 

Our curriculums at Fawbert and Barnard Infants’ and Reedings’ Junior School give the children the opportunity to learn through a variety of exciting and memorable contexts. From Fawbert and Barnard’s integrated Montessori approach in the Early Years and ‘Cornerstones’ cross curricular curriculum in Key Stage 1, through to Reedings’ bespoke curriculum, it is our intent that children at our schools:

  • Have high aspirations, resilience and perseverance 
  • Are problem solvers, with a thirst for knowledge who are confident to take risks  
  • Become active citizens in a diverse, global and digital society   
  • Are happy and secure within themselves and their pursuit for truth  
  • Are excited and motived with a deep-rooted love of learning.  

We believe our curriculums are progressive and support children in their pathway towards adulthood.
